The novel, made national blockbuster by Jon Avnet, is a story of two women and the right to live and be free in a world where anything outside of â€Å"the norm† was hard for others to understand. Cited in the text of Women and Gender, a radical feminist Rebecca West (1913) said, â€Å"I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat† (p. 6).
